O Coliseu outrora conhecido como Anfiteatro de Flávio, deve seu nome à expressão do latim Coliseum, devido ao colossus de Nero que ficava perto a edifícação. É uma excepção de entre os anfiteatros pelo seu volume e relevo arquitectónico, era um local onde seriam exibidos toda uma série de espectáculos, inseridos nos vários tipos de jogos realizados na urbe. Os combates entre gladiadores, entre estes e feras ou mesmo combates navais, inseridos no vasto movimento propagandístico romano, concedia uma especial relevância às características essenciais da cultura romana, dos valores morais greco-romanos instituídos e do verdadeiro “tesouro” composto pelas lendas e mitos desta civilização.
Antigamente o Coliseu era "inundado" para treinos de batalhas navais; pois a arena dispunha de um excelente sistema de drenagem, a ponto de quando o sistema estava fechado, devido ao acúmulo de água da chuva, era possível até praticar batalhas navais no interior do Coliseu! Daí podemos avaliar o grande conhecimento em arquitetura que os romanos possuíam.

I am imagining how this would have been filled with people in its heyday - The size of the people gives only a clue to its scale, I love the history of this place.

The underfloor area is amazing. I only learned about that at the Colosseum last year when we were able to visit briefly. Lovely shot.
