Lichens are symbiotic associations of a fungus (the mycobiont) with a photosynthetic partner (the photobiont also known as the phycobiont) that can produce food for the lichen from sunlight. The photobiont is usually either green algae or cyanobacteria. (...) Although lichens typically grow in naturally harsh environments, most lichens, especially epiphytic fruticose species and those containing cyanobacteria, are sensitive to manufactured pollutants. Hence, they have been widely used as pollution indicator organisms .

Nice shot. But no clue what it is......

@Anup: Lichen. Thanks Anup.
Wow, what a cool texture. Some sort of fungi. :)

@HorseRotorVator: Lichen. Thanks a lot.
Es extraña, pero atrayente. Muy buena.

@MDM: Lichen. Em português, chama-se líquen.
Gracias MDM.
Good picture, but it does not make me feel very good.

Great shot. But I find the subject quite yucky
12 Jul 2007 6:17am
So according to your writeup, you took this shot in a healthy area? Or low pollution, anyways...
Kind of a sickly yellow, isn't it?

@Walt: Yes. In a protecting area - Parque Natural das Serra de Aire e Candeeiros.
Thanks Walt.
Very fine capture!

@Susankritha: Thanks Susankritha.
Looks like an overcooked pancake, who knew that fungi took so many different shapes, colors, etc. Yucky subject shot well.

@Dawn Sutherland: Thank you.
I've been doing a course on fungi, slime moulds, lichens and mosses at our botanic gardens and this afternoon found a poster from the UK showing a continuum of fungi arranged from those most able to those least able to tolerate air pollution - fascinating. I think lichen and fungi are wonderful subjects for art - have a look at my fungi album if you have a minute http://picasaweb.google.com/bronkin/ForIrisAndDennis

@Bron: Thank you very much for the comment. I love your work.
Una foto curiosa e interesante. El liquen sobrevive sobre la superficie de una roca pelada, todo un ejemplo de que sin medios pero con buenas amistades se puede salir de cualquier situación. el hongo protege al alga y a su vez el alga lo alimenta. Saludos.

@Jose: Gracias Jose.
The better the air quality the more species you find. We get more in the damp west of the UK than the drier east, and there are thousands of species. You can use the one you photographed to make a great orange/yellow dye. You need a lot of lichen mind you, and I'm not sure I'd like to destroy something so lovely

Great information and wonderful detail in this shot. I see a lot of the green lichen on trees around me. Fascinating stuff.

Beautiful and sharp. Interesting placement within the frame, although I wish there was a fraction of space between it and the bottom edge. Just a detail, though.

It's an impressive shot, esp with the texture and vivid colors and if I didn't know it's a fungi, then I wouldn't feel like ewww! i guess the "ewww" made this picture effective, too. :)

@M.E.: Thanks M.E.

Visto assim, faz lembras as culturas de bactérias com que os cientistas trabalham. :) Mas, pensando bem, um fungo é isso mesmo :)
