I've always thought these were very prehistoric looking creatures. I used to windsurf in an area called "sting ray flats." You didn't take steps over the bottom, you shuffled your feet, because these rays don't like getting stepped on and when those barbed tails flip up and catch you the pain is supposed to be incredible. I've seen people brought into the first aid clinic at the beach screaming in pain from having stepped on one of these in the surf.
